Message from the River
This fall has been an exciting season for the Lower Mississippi River Foundation (LMRF). Earlier this month, we connected with educators from across Mississippi at the Teachers’ Night Out event in Jackson. It was inspiring to see so many passionate teachers exploring ways to bring river-based learning and outdoor education into their classrooms.
We were especially proud to have alumni like Reagan Wilson joining us to share her experience and enthusiasm for the river. Events like these remind us why our work matters — building connections, creating access to the river, and inspiring the next generation of stewards who will continue to care for this incredible resource.
🎉 Featured Event: Greenwood Community Canoe – November 8
Join us for an afternoon of paddling and community connection on the Yazoo and Yalobusha Rivers. The Greenwood Community Canoe invites families, educators, students, and neighbors to experience the beauty of the river while learning about its ecology and history.
Presented by the Lower Mississippi River Foundation, with expert canoe guiding & outfitting by the Quapaw Canoe Company, this free event offers participants the chance to explore one of Mississippi’s most scenic waterways in a safe, educational, and inspiring setting. No experience is necessary — just a sense of adventure.
Dress for weather, wear shoes that can get muddy & wet (or go barefoot). Pack open mouth water bottle. Everyone paddles together. Round trip from the new downtown Greenwood boat ramp. Hard paddling required going upstream, easy return with the flow. Must be in good physical condition, and be comfortable in close quarters with other paddlers.
We’re especially grateful to By the Bridge Bistro, a local Greenwood establishment, for graciously donating lunch for participants and volunteers.
Advance reservations required — and payment. Please contact Quapaw Canoe Company: John Ruskey, 662-902-7841, john@island63.com or Ceili Hale, (601) 918-6810, quapawceili@gmail.com. Free 18 & under, $25 educators, $50 all others.
We hope to see you on the water in Greenwood on Saturday, November 8, from 1–5 PM.
🎉 Event Recap: Teachers’ Night Out – October 4
We had a wonderful evening connecting with educators from across the state at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science in Jackson. Together, we shared ideas, resources, and opportunities for bringing river-based learning into classrooms.
LMRF staff members and alumni, including Reagan Wilson, a Summer Camp and Greenwood Community Canoe alumna now studying at Tougaloo College, enjoyed speaking with educators about our programs and future collaborations.
We’re grateful to everyone who stopped by our table, and we extend a big congratulations to Ms. Moore of Yazoo City, who won two free Community Canoe tickets in our raffle.
🌟 Alumni Spotlight: Reagan Wilson
Reagan Wilson first joined LMRF through our Summer Leadership Camp, where she discovered her love for being on the river — paddling by day and sleeping in a tent under the stars on Mississippi River islands.
She later joined our Greenwood Community Canoes, deepening her connection to the river and her community. Today, Reagan is a student at Tougaloo College, and we’re honored to have her join us for Teachers’ Night Out.
