Overcoming challenges: as you jump a hurdle, and you gain a little mastery over your destiny in life.

This fall Spring Initiative youth have been learning to captain their own canoes on the Sunflower River in downtown Clarksdale.

Many of these youngsters have grown up in Spring, doing guided group canoe trips, and exploring nature in guided groups.

Now they are learning to do it themselves…. with some expert assistance by Mighty Quapaw guides. Made possible through a partnership with the Lower Mississippi River Foundation.

A feeling of accomplishment and freedom…. Like learning to drive. With new skills you can reach places before not possible — on your own.

Finding freedom on the River

Lots of fun and adventure. Clarksdale kids learning to paddle their own canoes, on the Sunflower River, under the careful guidance of the Mighty Quapaws, and visionary Spring Initiative leaders, Matt Sutton and Nekirah Betts.

Everyone was learning to paddle their own canoes for the first time! Everyone did great.

Each and every one succeeded in learning to safely paddle around, and explore, and then return to shore.

Reward is roasting marshmallows around a bonfire as Venus shines her silvery light to the West, and Jupiter and Saturn with their golden glow nearby.

Community Canoe, this Saturday, Dec 11th

One-Year Old Genova joined us for the November Community Canoe!

This Saturday, Dec 11, is the next Community Canoe, from 12noon-5pm. If the weather turns bad we might move to Sunday afternoon. Free for kids under 18, and half price for educators ($25). Celebrate your river during this special time of year! Last one of the 2021.
