He is the founder of Quapaw Canoe Company, which offers expeditions on the Lower Mississippi River, and has built dozens of voyageur and dugout canoes. A former curator of the Delta Blues Museum, he also founded the Mighty Quapaws youth apprenticeship program and the Lower Mississippi River Foundation. Ruskey is the author of Wild Miles and Rivergator, and has paddled many of North America’s major rivers.
