No, i haven't seen any northern lights this year, which is weird because we have frequently seen them in years past and have a perfect spot with an open northern horizon.

Probably too much sunlight in the sky -- in your northerly latitudes also!
PS: have you seen aurora borealis this year? We actually saw the glowing red edge of in March. Last week did not extend and far south as predicted.
